I have done it both ways. I found that you can pull the motor out, with the tranny attached, but you have to do a couple things. To do it, you have to remove all the shifter assembly. This includes the top portion, the shift rod(lever) and the V shaped part that attaches to the tranny. With that stuff gone, you can pull the engine and tranny as one piece, without dropping the cross member. The trick is, to have someone under the car with a good rolling hydrolic jack to keep the rear of the tranny high. If you can keep the tranny high enough in the rear, you can manuver it straight out. It also helps to do this if you remove both of the cowl pieces under the wiper arms. It takes a little stealthy manuvering, of moving it up and forward and up and forward and raising the back, etc. but it can be done quite easily. I think that it took me about 20 minutes or less on the last engine that I pulled. You can also get it back it the same way, you just have to keep the rear of the engine high and as level as you can.
